Review of Live by Night (2016) by Movie M — 20 Oct 2017
Although "Live By Night" has its issues with a jumbled, sometimes messy plot, the overall movie was enjoyable, and I definitely had a good time with it. Ben Affleck (Joe Coughlin) was great in this movie, he gave a solid performance as the lead, bad-ass type of character, and after a badass role like playing Batman, he definitely follows it up with another hard role here.
I liked the general direction in which the movie was going, a 1920's American dream movie, with guns, money, and girls, basically a early 1900s gangster movie. That sound cool, especially when you have Ben Affleck as you lead, however I feel as though they could've made the plot a lot cleaner.
It was really jumbled, and with all the different mobsters and gang leaders, it got tough to keep track, which messed up the plot a little bit. For example, they would reference a character that had only been a side piece in one other scene in the movie, which made everything a little more confusing.
The action was good though, there were car chases, gun shootouts, and pretty much everything you'd expect from a high-tempo 1920s gangster movie. "Live by Night" could've taken more time to develop a more well-rounded plot, but all in all, it's worth watching if you're bored.
