Review of Live by Night (2016) by Brendan N — 09 May 2017

Affleck was the wrong choice to star in this film. You can clearly tell he was forcing the performance and was time restricted thanks to Batman v Superman and Justice League. The film lacks a soul and with these films you can't have a distant lead character from beginning to end.

I thought reviews were incorrect and many of them were, but like the audience, this film just lacked too much. I could've imagined Gosling in the lead with Affleck behind the lense, he just lacked conviction and was built like a war horse.

The reaching story tries hard and it works at times but in the end it's a miss that Affleck didn't need after Argo showed the range of talent. I expected a strong film but ended up with a subpar gangster film, hopefully there is a longer cut out there that build a longer masterpiece.
