Review of Little Voice (1998) by Kellie J — 29 Nov 2009
The movie, like the play before it, is constructed around Jane Horrocks' remarkable mimicry skills. Here she gives a great performance, although her character is a little tiresome. Can only sing if her dead dad's present? Get over yourself girl, and tone down the creepiness a smidge, ta.
I have to say though there's great work from Michael Caine and Jim Broadbent. Brenda Blethyn is really not to my taste here, but I suppose, well, she certainly gives it her all! I think the weak link is the direction.
The movie seems slow and predictable in many places. And Michael Caine says they cut his favourite line. When Mari finds out her daughter LV is agoraphobic, she says: "If you're agoraphobic you can get out!" Pure class.
