Review of Little Shop of Horrors (1986) by Sarah J — 27 Apr 2009
Hmmm, well this is a toughy. On the one hand it's a predictable musical, with all the annoying squarky numbers (I'm not a particular fan of this sort of musical arrangement) and classic over-told storyline, but once you enter into the spirit of the thing it's really hard not to sucumb to its charm. It's self-consciously cheesy, and I found myself, for once, not wanting the romantic leads to be visciously torn appart, but demanding the happy ending! Frank Oz treats his screen like a stage, and gives the film an ironic touch that makes the whole thing so entertaining! The plant has a magnificently offensive vocabulary and an attitude to match, what more could you want?
Besides this film gets kudos for coming up with something truly terrifying inside all this cheese - and its not the blood-drinking, man-eating plant! Watch out for Bill Murray is all I'll say, cause it was a nice surprise.
The theme song's damn catchy too... "Little shop, little shop of horrors... doop doop doobydoobydooby".
