Review of Little Shop of Horrors (1986) by Nicole F — 20 Feb 2010
It's got a murderous singing plant, a sadistic dentist and 80's comedy legend Rick Moranis - do you need to know anything else. This is a musical remake of a 50's B-film and what a superb idea - this film shimmers with the joy of parody, the story is compelling and the humour darker than a black cat at midnight.
This film isn't perfect and Ellen Greene (Audrey) is a little lacklustre at times but the songs are where the show really comes alive. From the opening chords of Skid Row you really know that you're going to be getting something good - and this doesn't disappoint.
As if the music wasn't enough this is an excellent opportunity to see the comedy showdown of Steve Martin and Billy Murray in a cameo roll - and an even smaller cameo roll. This film looks like it was a great adventure to make and having directed it (children in a stage version) I know that you can have great fun playing around with the script and characters.
A massive thumbs up from me of this mid eighties parody masterpiece.
