Review of Little Miss Sunshine (2006) by Matt M — 27 May 2013
Its reputation precedes it, as its academy award nomination that season was important and recognised the importance and influence of the American independent cinema. Little Miss Sunshine is a film about a not so happy family taking to the road to accompany their daughter to a beauty pageant.
The ultimate message would seem a little cliché, 'be yourself no matter what'. Yet, the screenplay is so cleverly written, and the performances seem so genuine that it's hard not to fall for its charm.
Furthermore, the film's deadpan comedy conceals some original dramatic depth, while the character development recalls a more compelling type of European films.
