Review of Little Men (2016) by Doug B — 29 Aug 2016
No cars explode - no bombs detonate - no guns are fired. and yet, when this movie was over, I felt like I'd walked through a minefield of emotions and class issues and growing pains. when Greg Kinnear's character tells his son what kind of stamina it takes to decide to live ones life as an artist I wanted to whip out my phone and start recording it. anyone who's ever even just had a conversation in their head about making art will be able to relate to it.
I can't remember seeing any other film - ever - which so accurately describes the experience of loving someone who can only like you back. the heartbreak and the intensity are expressed not through dialogue, but rather through body language, glances and silence. it's genuinely masterful.
