Review of Little Children (2006) by Samantha R — 20 Jan 2010
I love dysfunction. Or so I thought. Give me American Beauty any day over this film.
Based on the novel by the same name, perhaps my problem lies with the script rather than the film overall. The only pattern I could sense that linked all these characters is their immaturity. Each person reacts and acts like a teenager rather than an adult. Is that the purpose of the title? They are all Little Children? Regardless of intent, in the end none of the characters are appealing in any way whatsoever. So it was hard for me to care about any of them at all.
But the film itself seems to want to be many things all at once. Does it want to be quirky/different by adding the occasional deep voiced narration? Was that supposed to be funny or amusing? Is it merely supposed to be a glimpse into private lives and therefore wants to appear sterile or cold? Is it trying hard to show us harsh reality versus slow motion 'I'm enamored with this person" dreamlike sequences? Seemed to me to be alot of different things all at once, none of which appealed to me personally.
The acting was very good. Love Kate Winslet. And Jackie Earle Hayley is on my 'most creepy' list for sure (that's how good he was). :) But the film felt uneven and unappealing.
