Review of Little Children (2006) by Brett H — 19 Oct 2014
A rough-around-the-edges suburban satire of the secrets kept behind closed doors and it's subject matter is anything but suitable for who the title suggests! Kate Winslet is outstanding playing an unkempt mother who's disillusioned by her mundane existence and desperately grasps to become something more.
Patrick Wilson and Noah Emmerich also add fantastic, supporting work as two characters with serious moral dilemmas and goals. It's a depressing film, and with the wide range of characters gives you an insight into the day-to-day lives of the middle class and what some may call, "white people problems", but it's more than that when you analyze each character's desperation for happy lives.
Everything comes to a head in a shocking ending that left me confounded immediately after with it's abrupt conclusion when there was certainly more to tell. There's also an omniscient narrator that distracted from the drama and I feel could be completely removed or used sparringly.
It's not a cheery film and I can't see many people enjoying themselves watching it, but it is a powerful drama and sometimes you have to see the ugly side of normal life.
