Review of Little Big Man (1970) by Edith N — 26 Oct 2010
Dustin Hoffman is just great in this film. He plays a white man raised by Indians and the film follows him throughout his life and his experiences. He is consistently living amongst different types of people throughout his life and he learns valuable lessons from everyone.
The movie is a bit of a twist because it's really one of the few films that depict Native Americans in a good light. They are just as normal as the whites in the film and even have higher morals.
Some stand out performances other than Dustin Hoffman were Chief Dan George who was really good as the Grandfather and chief of the village. He is really funny at times and bestows great wisdom on Dustin Hoffman's character Little Big Man.
Overall, this was a nice little Western. The only problems I had were that it doesn't really clarify that they are speaking different languages, but its spoken in English. Sounds confusing..it is! And Little Big Man seems to jump into so many cultures I found it hard to believe that so many of the people he left would so readily accept him back into their lives. Small little quirps...nothing too big. Oh and this movie is super long!
Give this one a look if your int Westerns with a good character development feel to it.
