Review of Little Big Man (1970) by Tyler H — 15 Mar 2012
This is one of those films that was far more significant and powerful at the time of its release than it is decades later. This movie overturned decades of American Wild West orthodoxy by depicting the destruction of the plains Indians as the result of genocidal policies, and it portrayed positive facets of Native American culture that had heretofore been ignored by white America.
The movie features a powerful performance by Dustin Hoffman, one of his very best. From today's perspective, perhaps the sympathetic treatment of Native Americans seems oversimplified in its revisionism, but much of the film's essential message about cultural hubris and American Imperialism continues to ring true.
