Review of Little Ashes (2008) by Kevin N — 07 Oct 2009
Salvador Dali would shudder if he were alive to see this light analysis of his life based solely on a passing sexual desire. It's a small film with little vision beyond exploiting the relationship between Dali and Lorca to the director's own thematic intentions, and it's actually quite hard to see these three artists (Bunuel serves only as a convenient monster) downgraded to such simplistic caricatures.
Pattinson, like some sort of street performer, bounces between the stages of Dali's life like it's some sort of game, and Beltran and McNulty play the drama awkwardly. It's a shame- a story about these three legends could have been extraordinary and deep, but instead it caters to Morrison's own agenda.
