Review of Little Ashes (2008) by Derek M — 29 Mar 2010
Although advertise as being about Salvador Dali, Little Ashes seems more about Federico Garcia Lorca with his friendship with Dali being the focus of the narrative. I'm a fan of Dali's work and with that I was hesitant of him being portrayed by Robert Pattinson.
I liked the guy as Cedric Diggory but beyond that haven't cared too much for him. Incidentally, he does end up stealing just about every scene he's in with his ever increasing weirdness, but I feel that's mostly because the rest of the movie just falls incredibly flat on just about every level.
The story moves at such a fast clip that just about every ounce of characterization is removed. Given the subject matter it could have been a great movie but it just wasn't. I hope the rumored Dali biopic manages to be, though, since Dali was as interesting a character in life as any made-up one in film or literature.
