Review of Lisztomania (1975) by Dominic H — 22 Jul 2009
I finally got to see this forgotton film (to be honest most of Russell's films have sadly somehow become that).
I have been a Ken Russell fan for quite a while now and was expecting something unique out of this film. Unique is an understatement this is probably his most insane, bizarre, over the top film I have ever. Roger Daltry plays the lead who's goal is to stop the Vampire, Antichrist, ressurected Hitler also know known as the composer Wagner. That is basically the plot but both Liszt and Wagner's music have been revamped with added songs and synth keys added to the mix.
I really liked this film but I have to admit the 'hell' sequence was overdone especially due to the fact the scene has no meaning to the lot or characters.
The best actor in the film is Paul Nicholas as Wagner he reallly is fun to watch Dalty is just ok.
This film is not for everyone and I rarely say that about movies but this is one where people will be divided. If you are a Russell fan I recommend it and leave it all up to you.
