Review of Limitless (2011) by Daniel R — 19 Nov 2012
I'm kind of conflicted about this one. On one hand, it's science fiction based on a bad popular understanding of the mind, doesn't really carry anything it brings up to its logical conclusion, and uses what seems like narration added to the film in post to almost literally spell out what is going on for the audience in a movie about intelligence.
On the other, the performances are good--even De Niro isn't totally phoning it in here--the cinematography is inventive, and it seems like a movie that did what it could with subpar source material and studio interference.
You kind of want to give it a higher grade for being a major science fiction release that at least tries--a lot like "The Adjustment Bureau," i.e. the smartest kid in a room full of dumb kids.
