Review of Limitless (2011) by Tonygreen — 11 Sep 2018
This is a pretty enjoyable, fun thriller. It has some gritty action sequences too, and a really clever use of CGI to modify the 'field-of-view' of the drug sequences.
It's also really, really stupid. Which is ironic for a movie about a 'smart drug'. I think the narrative might be partly hampered by a desire avoid the censor by underlining the negative effects of (even fictional?) drugs. Some of the problems I had with it:
-What happened to Eddie's (Bradley Cooper) novel?? It was his life's greatest ambition and he finished it and it was apparently brilliant but...it wouldn't be published for a year so let's forget about it.
-Gaming the stockmarket is of course the logical intellectual pursuit for the character(?).
-Eddie's blacking-out / withdrawing / dying / they're all dying; oh no its ok, they changed the NZT-48 formula, he avoids alcohol, all's well, move on.
-The scene where Eddie drinks Gennady's NZT-48 laced blood(!!) And those henchmen are so busy breaking into the safe they miss the knife fight ensuing just behind them.
