Review of Limelight (1952) by Arttu S — 02 Dec 2009
The greatest movie of all time! Period. Not because it is the greatest technical achievement, nor because it has the greatest acting or the most brilliant of screenplays, but because it is a true enduring portrait of beauty and romance, without falling into cliches.
Over nostalgic and poignant, it is a piece from the heart from a man(both on and off screen), once loved and now on the brink of forgotenness and old age. If you love Chaplin and his work you will understand that every word, every gesture, every nuance falls into place.
It is a self-balletic swan song for the greatest artist that ever lived, and the music, the dialogue, the shots and the situations all build up for a undying farewell. Anyway, it will probably seem over-melodramatic and over-poetic if seen out of context, that is, if you are not a Chaplin connoisseur.
