Review of Like Father, Like Son (2013) by Steve P — 21 Apr 2014
A brilliant movie! This Japanese drama raises deep questions about parenting, what it means to be family, what makes a child one's own child, can children be easily moved from couple to couple?, what role circumstances and culture play in the development of personality, the ethical issues related to parental values and values determined by circumstances.
.. And so much more. I found my own emotions challenging as I watched the story unfold and my values confronted and explored. The acting was superb - I'm continually astonished at the way in which directors are able to evoke such natural acting from very young children.
A genuinely provocative and evocative piece of cinema that explores very important aspects of human and family life - especially for those who may not end up living with their biological parents. If you don't get to the cinema to watch it, make sure you pick it up on its DVD release.
And the ask - what would you do on a situation like this?
