Review of Lights Out (2016) by David S — 30 Aug 2016
I have a feeling there were some deleted scenes that would have helped make sense of this movie, since what we are given on screen, simply, didn't make a whole lot of sense. Especially with that bad ending.
Lights Out was both new, yet somehow done time and again. Was Diana a ghost? A figment of Maria Bello's mind so strongly believed that she became real? An energy source? I don't know. It was a decent movie that needed more (and much better) back story.
It's mildly scary, somewhat reminiscent of (the far better) Insidious, some neat camera work, some tense moments, some "haha, that was scary" spots, but all in all, needed work. Theresa Palmer is cute as always, Bello and the boy do fine, but this movie won't provide any lasting impressions.
P.S. I conceived Diana to be some kind of energy, which would work well, but that gets tossed out the window at movie's end with the way in which Bello rids the world of that entity. I don't know.
See it if you're into little scares and not much story.
