Review of Lights Out (2016) by Jake M — 07 Oct 2017
I wouldn't say Lights Out is necessarily the scariest movie of the 2016 but it is really fun to watch. Lights Out is about this entity who is haunting this family that only appears when the lights are off but when you turn them on she suddenly disappears, and as the film goes on you hear the history of this entity and why she's disturbing this family.
For those of you that don't know Lights Out began as a 3 minute short film online in 2013 directed by David S Sandberg who also directed the movie, so the fact that Sandberg was able to craft a great film from a 3 minute short is makes it over all more impressive.
Teresa Palmer plays the protagonist in this film this is by far her best film and she plays her part great, which really makes up for her past performances in films such as I am Number Four (2011), The Sorcerers Apprentice (2010), and Warm Bodies (2013).
Gabriel Bateman who plays the kid in this movie also does great in this movie as well, and in my opinion has a very bright future a head of him. In my opinion the best actress in this film was definitely Maria Bello, I wouldn't say this is her best film but she's always in either dramas (i.
E Prisoner (2013), A History of Violence (2005), etc) or comedies like both Grown Ups movies so seeing her in a horror movie and seeing her do so well was great. And because I'm listing practically every person in this film its only fair that I give credit to Alexander DiPersia who played the boyfriend, because he provide the comedic relief to the movie.
James Wan is one of my favorite horror movie directors because he manages to make films that are fun and terrifying without any use of blood or torture (except for Saw (2004)), though Lights Out might not be as scary as The Conjuring or Insidious films its still a very good film.
What I really loved about this film was that it didn't have the typical horror movie cliches, I felt these characters were smart enough to know not to go anywhere that could kill them, and I also liked how they didn't make the boyfriend in this movie an asshole which I feel like happens in every horror movie.
Though it may not be terrifying, Lights Out is a fun, eerie, chilling, and intense film that will keep you on the edge of your seat from start to finish, if you are a fan of horror films but are tired of cliches and blood/gore than I recommend you give Lights Out I try, I can guarantee you won't be disappointed.
