Review of Lights Out (2016) by Luke Z — 25 Jul 2016
"Lights Out" doesn't cover any new ground from scary movies you've seen before, but it is still a first-rate thriller that will chill the spine of even the most jaded viewer. Palmer and Bateman are exemplary in the two lead roles and Maria Bello shines as the mother with disturbing secrets in her past.
One thing I appreciated most was the judicious use of 'jump scares' by the director, David Sandberg. Many directors use far too many in their thrillers, thereby rendering them ineffective after awhile.
Sandberg uses them expertly so that even the ones that happen during the climax of the film are frightening. This is an outstanding effort by the director, cast, and especially the screenwriters. Definitely a must-see!
