Review of Lights in the Dusk (2006) by Toni L — 26 Oct 2007
Through Kaurismaki, this was my first experience with Finnish cinema. An interesting work of film noir, focusing on lonely characters lacking much of what people take for granted in their daily lives. Koistinen's a sympathetic protagonist, and the rest of the cast is memorable as well.
A somber film about ordinary people, but with a quiet warmth beneath the cold and darkness. My favorite scenes were the ones between Koistinen and the woman who worked at the small grill. I need to see more of Kaurismaki's work.
