Review of Lifeforce (1985) by Eric L — 20 Apr 2010
This is an interesting movie, more a respectable failure than anything else, and while it sounds silly it's totally worth watching.
To be honest, I had no idea what to expect but the triumvirate of Dan O'Bannon, Tobe Hooper, and Patrick Stewart could probably make any movie watchable and I lapped this up.
I guess it's hard to classify and that kinda muddles things up a bit; LIFEFORCE is part sci-fi thriller, part zombie/vampire hybrid, part political commentary. While all these aspects do get a touch out of control as they run into each other, they do also make an awesome old-school cult movie stew, and I really dug it.
At times it feels like watching SCANNERS, or a totally fucked-up TWILIGHT ZONE episode crossed with schlocky Hammer sensibilities and an attempt at playing it straight.
Whatever, LIFEFORCE is two tons of fun to watch and the gruey special FX were AWESOME.
I feel like this should be compared to Rodriguez' GRINDHOUSE segment and it pretty much shows you what Rodriguez was trying (but failed) to do.
They really don't make 'em like this anymore.
