Review of Life of Pi (2012) by Michael N — 07 Oct 2013
After completing this movie the first impression I had was why didn't they have the part pertaining to Pi and Richard Parker killing the blind man near the end of the book? Personally I felt that this portion was a big part in the plot mainly because of how bad Richard Parker and Pi's situation was and leaving the question of who did he find? Was it someone from the crew from the Tsimtsum? Considering that Pi had no idea this leaves us to guess as well (and hence why he may not have shown who the person was). Either way I felt given the amount of conversation you can have around this book/movie that this portion was no exception.
However looking back this movie was absolutely done perfectly. The plot was essentially dead on. Making sure to nail the most important parts of the novel but also not creating a 10 hour movie. Don't get me wrong the Novel is a much better choice if you want the full effect, as books will always explain and describe a scene that is much more personal and detailed than a movie could ever do. Needless to say this movie, which is based on the novel, stands out compared to other movies of this type. Sound and visual effects also what create this movie so breath taking. Unfortunately I rented this movie as a standard version but a 3D, Blu Ray edition is very much needed and recommended to get the entire experience. This movie is a must. Regardless if you believe in god or the idea that this plot will make you believe in god, which I don't necessarily agree with, it has a theme that gets you to wonder what the meaning of life means to you personally. Which makes for a better story the one with animals or the one without animals? Even with the slight issue I had with the film I just can't rate it even slightly lower than a 5/5, even though at first I thought 4.5/5.0, since the movie is so perfect in every other category. A weekend night price for a 3D, IMAX experience is not suggested it is required. The only other films that I felt deserve this type of rating was the Dark Night and the Dark Night Rises.
