Review of Life Itself (2014) by Josh O — 02 Aug 2014
It feels so odd reviewing a movie about a film critic, but that is the situation at hand with the release of documentary legend Steve James's new film Life Itself. I personally consider Roger Ebert one of my most influencing figures in film, remembering reading reviews of his for hours, almost always being my deciding factor in watching a movie or not.
Life Itself focusing mainly on two of Ebert's relationships in his life, Gene Siskel, film critic and frenemy, and Chaz Ebert, his wife who cares for him after his health deteriorated. The images of him in his last months of life, without a lower jaw and voice, are powerful but he looks happy throughout it.
This documentary is well edited and timed touching all the right moments, although more focus on his childhood and other aspects of his life besides his Tv show with Gene would have been nice. Overall a wonderful documentary about a wonderful man.
Highly Recommended.
