Review of Life Itself (2014) by Damjan R — 17 Feb 2015
Rich in sympathy but still truthful, but for me #LifeItself works more like a vignette than a fully realized film. Roger Ebert was and is one of the most important people in cinema, but he came before my time so my relationship to him and his body work is only limited.
What the film manages to convey is his furious energy and love for film, something we do share and it's always refreshing and reinvigorating to see that level of passion in someone else. This film will probably mean more to previous generations, but that said, the film itself does tend to ramble on, not really focusing on one aspect instead dipping its toes into various aspects of Ebert's life, not fully exploring almost any, apart from his relationship with Gene Siskel and his limitless life energy.
I would recommend it as a piece of importance but like I said, people who bore witness to him when he was his most active will enjoy more than I did.
