Review of Life Itself (2014) by Robert B — 12 Jan 2016
This portrait of Roger Ebert's life, career, and his eventual illness and death is a poignant documentary that portrays the troubles of illness and death in a raw and emotional way, without hiding any of the bad stuff.
Also, as a biography of someone who has recently passed away, it doesn't shy away from his rough edges. While it celebrates Ebert's accomplishments and his successes, it also shows that he could be a bit of a jerk too.
..but a jerk with a heart of gold. I always liked Ebert, he was part of the landscape of movies for me growing up. I didn't always agree with him, but I always respected him. Any fan of the movies would find something in this that tugs at the heartstrings in a genuine way, as it rarely feels manufactured.
What better tribute for a lover of movies, than a document of his life that is a pretty fine movie.
