My favourite Mike Leigh movie, and probably his most positive, which may not be surprising since it's his first in which class metaphors were no longer allowed to dictate all the character traits. What is interesting is that he immediately followed this with Naked, which is his darkest film.
Jane Horrocks is insanely sexy and fucked up at the same time in Life Is Sweet, and David Thewlis (star of Naked) puts in an appearance, although he joked that he "wrote himself out" when he reacted to Horrocks's scream to "fuck off", by, well -- fucking off! Timothy Spall plays a hilarious aspiring restaurateur in a supporting role.
