Review of Life as a House (2001) by Ben B — 02 Mar 2008
The lovechild of a family chanel original movie and the MTV soap opera "undressed". Some excellant performances by Kevin Kline and Hayden Christenson, and a good concept. I don't know where it fell apart exactly, only that it did. Some sex, some ethical ambiguity, a wannabe happy, still in love but improbably divoriced couple and a bunch of actors trying to make something of their characters.
When it focused on its central realtationship (that of father and son) it was pure gold. When it deviated, it was pure rust. The combination is a somewhat shiny, but terribly messy surface which splinters in the skin even while we want to touch it.
