Review of License to Wed (2007) by Timothy S — 08 Dec 2011
Over the years, Robin Williams has proven to be a fine dramatic actor in films like "The Night Listener" and "Good Will Hunting". And, while he's primarily known as a comedian and a comic actor, his comedic roles are becoming more and more insufferable. As exhibit F or G (who's keeping track?"), I present to you "License to Wed".
Nothing in the movie is worth seeing, but a big reason for its failure lies with Williams himself. Movie after movie, he does the same tiresome schtick, and it has never been more annoying, boring and trite as it is here. But, lets spread the blame around some. I'm not sure where John Krasinski came from, but he should go back there. He's so bland I'm not sure why anyone would have pegged him for a movie career. He should get together with the forgettable Bryan Greenberg from "Prime" and have coffee. Mandy Moore is an appealing star, and she even shines in this dud, but the script lets her down.
There's not one laugh in this routine, forgettable picture. It's aimed at a TV sit-com level, and that's the level it achieves. There's not one genuine moment or authentic emotion in the entire movie, and everything happens just like you know it well. There's not a single surprise in the whole wrong-headed mess. Nothing disappoints me more than a lazy movie that you've seen a hundred times. With "LIcense to Wed", you can make that one hundred and one. There is no reason for this movie to exist.
