Review of Liberal Arts (2012) by David B — 26 Feb 2013
Liberal Arts is a really good film about life. Jesse Fischer, a 35 year old young man (played by Josh Radnor who also directed the film) is caught between the nostalgia of his college years & the professional world.
He goes back to his Alma Mater in Ohio to visit an old professor & falls for a vibrant & intellectual college student named Zibby (played by Elizabeth Olsen). As the relationship progresses, Jesse learns that Zibby is too young for him, & he no longer exists in the "college world".
The film analyzes very well: the issues with major age gaps in relationships, people not wanting to leave their college years behind & people living in the past & not wanting to retire. The film ultimately focuses on the stages of life & the progression of life with a great performance from Olsen.
Richard Jenkins & Allison Janney are old pros & have good performances. I was very impressed with Olsen as the young student too mature for boys her own age. This movie should have been nominated for an Academy Award for Best Movie.
In a different type of year it probably would have been. You have to be at least 30 to truly understand it in my view & have any perspective on it. I could truly relate to it as an intellectual piece.
The audience will not be dissapointed.
