Review of Liberal Arts (2012) by Daniel W — 07 Oct 2012
Grown up, touchy feely movie painted in pastel shades rather than bold colours. Looks at themes of ageing and learning in the context of an American East Coast college teaching humanities. The film is commendable for not following a predictable narrative course, but the plot gently curves, rather than twists.
The film explores what value there is to be gained in relationships with your elders or those many years junior to yourself. It also promotes the value of reading and books. Josh Radnor, who also wrote and directed this film is OK as the beardy male lead seeking meaning in his life.
Elizabeth Olsen is only mildly irritating as the female love interest. Allison Janney is rather miscast, but underused, as a lecturer in the Romantic poets. Richard Jenkins is excellently grouchy at a retiring professor, seeking to hold back time.
Not your average rom com, indeed unlike many other films I can recall. One to look out for, but don't expect fireworks.
