Review of Liberal Arts (2012) by Yasminandbell . — 26 Mar 2013
Liberal Arts is Josh Radnor's most assured and confident work to date. It's a measured step up from his directing debut, happythankyoumoreplease, and matches if not surpasses anything he's done as Ted on How I Met Your Mother.
It's his version of a midlife crisis movie, with his character searching for a new purpose and a meaningful relationship in his thirties, and he finds it in someone nearly half his age. It's beautifully acted by Radnor and especially Elizabeth Olsen, who continues to amaze and show off her skills as one of the most talented young actresses working today.
The only thing that rang false was the Allison Janney storyline, which felt forced and pretty hypocritical at the same time. Liberal Arts isn't breaking any new thematic ground but is more than capably told and thoughtful enough to make it worth engaging.
