Review of Leviathan (2014) by Hugo G — 15 Jan 2015
8.5/10.
The Russian submission to the Best Foreign Language Oscar race, is a very ambitious movie, contextually and in protest towards its country and its government. With the portrayal of corruption and a story center on a family facing this terrible adversities. Not only is very brave of the director to make a film of this subject, to also to be able to somewhat relate the story with real life situations and actual people. Therefore, the story had its very good moments but also there was some drama related more to the family problems, and so maybe that derailed the story a little bit, but maybe that was referencing how real people have problems and in there making the characters and their story more human and relatable. Moreover, the acting was also really good and really connected with every character, making the movie more real. Overall, it started very good and maybe halfway the stories started departing from the main plot, and it made it lose some momentum, but then again it was not a typical movie but rather one that dig deeper with its corruptive content.
