Review of Leviathan (1989) by Mark N — 27 Sep 2012
Along with Deepstar Six & The Abyss all coming out in the same year its no surprise that the big budget movie is the one that stands tallest. Leviathan is a ripoff/mix of Alien aesthetics/plot and The Thing's monster... and I mean exactly those things:
The crew are mirrors for Alien (down to one white, one black engineers who complain about completion bonuses), dank pipe laden corridors, crisp lit medical bay, girl in white undies in a small room, stumble across an abandoned ship with holes ripped in it, bring something back that infects and hunts the crew. From there they jumble in a 'The Thing' like monster, complete with body melding scenes, with a few original ideas that show that this could have been a great movie.
Hudson, Crenna & Weller predictably provide good performances and keep the plot going well enough to make an enjoyable action/horror story. The effects are pretty decent and the monsters work. Over all I really liked the movie... as much for its blatant ripping off as well as some fun sequences.
