Review of Letters from Iwo Jima (2006) by David K — 30 Jan 2010
War movies are getting more and more difficult to do well these days. It's evident that Saving Private Ryan set a new standard for them back in 1998 and it's a shame that no war film has been able to match it or surpass its brilliance.
Letters of Iwo Jima does just that however. (Spielberg Executive Produced it. Coincidence?) The film is overwhelmingly amazing and left me in awe at the credits. I don't want to get into too much detail, but it's a "counterpart" to Flags of our Fathers.
Letters is by far the superior of the two. It proves yet again that Clint Eastwood is one of the best American filmmakers in history as this war movie is one of the best in history.
