Clint showed the Japanese perspective on defending their homeland in the closing stages of World War 2. He even went as far as to show the Imperial Japanese Armed Forces wasn't a cohesive unit. Soldiers expressed ' defeatist attitudes' within earshot of officers.

. Officers disagreed with their Generals, Generals felt abandoned to die, in an unwinnable battle with no reinforcements. In the midst of all of this it is disgraceful to your ancestors to surrender to the enemy, and a sign of serious cowardice to even think of ordering a retreat.

You are to die where you stand to win the battle, and if you fail, you are expected to blow yourself up as a regular soldier or shoot yourself if you are a commanding officer. Couldn't make this stuff up.
