The key points are that men do inhumane things during war, both to the "enemy" and to their own brethren, all in name of patriotism or hatred (pick one, they're associated). The director's ability to show the despised display of humanity and the sickening enjoyment of inhumanity within war was a primary goal.
I think Eastwood succeeded.
