Review of Letter from an Unknown Woman (1948) by Ryan M — 02 Jun 2010
Stefan Brand's got a duel with "an excellent shot" in 2 hours, but he doesn't plan on catching an early death so he opts to skip town in an hour, but when he walks back into his home his servant hands him a letter, with one of the most chilling opening lines found in any letter:
"By the time you read this, I may be dead".
Stefan and the audience are then told via flashbacks + reimaginings of past events; who sent the letter, how she knew Stefan and why he failed to remember her. A tearjerking melodrama that works because it touches on that old theme of unrequited love that everybody loves to watch but hates to go through in real life. The ending is perfect in more ways than one.
