Review of Letter from an Unknown Woman (1948) by Private U — 25 Nov 2008
"By the time you read this letter, I may be dead..." So begins the letter that will redeem Stefan, a dissipate pianist, who has squandered his talents and whose character is corrupted and unworthy.
The writer of the letter is one of the many women he has had and forgotten. Her profession of lifelong love for him and her account of their meetings, in effect, remakes Stefan into the man of her romantic dream.
As he finishes reading, he has no choice but to join her and goes off to face a duel that will surely mean his own death. Very simply, one of the most romantic films ever made.
