Review of Let's Be Cops (2014) by Tyler R — 18 Apr 2015
Good chemistry between the two leads: Check. Ummm...Well....Yeah. There are some films that come out that feel like an overly long SNL skit. This is that film. Let's Be Cops follows two down on their luck roommates as they pretend to be cops, but end up getting involved in some nasty stuff.
The potential was most certainly there, and Damon Wayans, Jr. and Jake Johnson certainly have the chemistry, but they are stuck with a screenplay that is not only been overdone more than a Seth MacFarlane joke, but also entirely devoid of humor.
The jokes that make up this film are very slim in number, but they are warped and twisted and regurgitated back out in a different way so as to make us believe they are new. I didn't laugh once, only finding myself smirking a couple times in the middle.
The other glaring issue with this film is the tone. This is meant to be a comedy, but the entire ending pulls a complete 180 and actually delves into dramatic territory, which is really jarring. And throughout the film, there are less severe moments of awkward tonal shifts, from comedy to drama to romance to crime thriller.
Unfortunately, the entire cast, and it is a very talented one, is painfully wasted in a film that is as unfunny as actual jail time.
