Review of Lethal Weapon 2 (1989) by Dann M — 12 Mar 2012
Lethal Weapon 2 makes the classic mistake of going over-the-top, way over-the-top. Richard Donner returns to direct this sequel in which Riggs and Murtaugh are pitted against a group of South African diplomats that are secretly running a crime syndicate in LA.
The plot is beyond ridiculous and is full of common tropes that are exceedingly obvious, like the wisecracking criminal sidekick. And that sidekick is Joe Pesci, who joins the cast and adds a lot of unneeded comedy that changes the tone of the film and breaks up the buddy cop feel.
The film brings the action once again, but it's over-the-top action that's almost cartoonish. There's a lot of fun to be had in Lethal Weapon 2, but it's lost all of the smart edginess that the first one had.
