Review of Lethal Weapon (1987) by Nick G — 06 Dec 2010
When you stop and think about it, this is probably the epitome of the buddy movie (or, at least, the buddy-cup subgenre). So why did they make three more?
The movie boasts a pretty fascinating story, very reliable character development, and some great lines (thanks, Shane Black!).
Mel Gibson does a fantastic job of acting like a heartbroken psycho [insert joke about how he wasn't really acting], and Danny Glover really gets across the point that he's getting too old for this shit. Gary Busey is solid, probably because he hadn't yet crashed his motorcycle and gone nuts. Plus, Tom Atkins stops by and does what he does best: drink.
The movie's only real flaw is the completely nonsensical fight between Riggs and Joshua at the end. It doesn't really have a point, except for there to be a big fight, and if you think too hard (read: at all) about the reasoning behind it, you'll go as crazy as Busey is now.
End of review joke reference to another movie: Mr. Joshua has his head so far up General McAllister's ass, I don't know where he ands and the General begins!
