Review of Let the Right One In (2008) by Dan C — 20 May 2013
A deconstruction of the vampire story, but from the perspective of a maladjusted preteen boy. It has that airy, leisurely vibe that one might associate with a foreign film, which, along with the seamless digital effects, ups the realism of the story considerably.
The acting is likewise understated and naturalistic, which is credit to the director, who, reportedly, played down the genre elements of the story. What we get then is something I've come to admire very much in cinema, as opposed to more serious, Oscar-type conventional dramas, the kind of movie that takes genre content and transcends it, that wrings something perhaps more honest and perceptive or at least original out of vampires, robots, and aliens.
