Review of Less Than Zero (1987) by Patrick H — 28 Mar 2009
A powerful story of how three friends succumb to one's abuse. Clay (Andrew McCarthy), Blair (Jami Gertz) and Julian (Robert Downey, Jr.) were best friends but went to part their seprate ways after graduating high school.
While away at college, Clay learns that Blair slept with Julian. When she asks him to return home over Christmas vacation, he reluctantly accepts. Apparently, Julian has gotten in big debt with an old friend, Rip (James Spader).
Even worse, Julian has a drug problem which only makes the situation more unstable. Downey and Gertz give very good performances but I was particularly impressed by McCarthy's work. He is the only sober one throughout the whole movie so he is the counterbalance to everyone else's actions.
Make an extra effort to look for this one.
