Review of Les Misérables (2012) by Emma F — 18 Feb 2014
You do not see many new musicals these days. This does not matter much to me, as I do not particularly like musicals. They just seem a little strange to me, but musicals are like westerns in that they used to be extremely popular and one still pops up every few years.
The first time I watched the movie I didn't like it at all, admittedly this was because I didn't like musicals and was only watching it for the Oscars (as it was nominated for Best Picture and two others and won Best Supporting Actress).
I don't remember much about that first viewing other then I didn't like it much, but I wouldn't be surprised if I didn't pay much attention to it that first time. After watching again I must admit, it was rather entertaining.
Not only are there some catchy songs but also the acting is rather good. Especially by Anne Hathaway who won Best Supporting Actress who deserved it for sure, she was not on screen for long but when she was she was jaw dropping.
If you like musicals then you should absolutely love this movie. But even if, like me, they are not your favorite genre I think when the credits roll you will find Les Misérables entertaining if nothing else.
