Les Miserables is extensive and overbearing to be mild, but Jackman miraculously brings it to life from its predetermined resting place of intolerably melodic screenplays carrying all 157 tortuous minutes on his shoulders like a martyr displayed symbolically in the film's opening scene as a heavily waterlogged and half-destroyed French flagstaff.
