Review of Les Misérables (2012) by Randy R — 05 May 2015
This is one excellent film. And this is a very well made musical. A truly epic film in size and scope. The musical numbers, which is the entire film, were very well rehearsed, superbly acted and superbly directed.
Now, I am not a fan of musicals but this had my attention from the start and it is very rare for a musical to achieve that. In fact, this, Sweeny Todd: The Demon Barber Of Fleet Street, Pitch Perfect and The Phantom Of The Opera are all excellent musicals and with those four, they are well directed, acted, written, rehearsed, shot, edited and scored.
The film stars Hugh Jackman and Russell Crowe and Jean Valjean and Javert, a prisoner and a police inspector, at the start of the film when Javert tells him never to forget his name shall he break parole when he is released.
Valjean travels thru out France trying to live an honest life and does that after he is caught stealing from a priest who gave him shelter the night before and forgives him on the condition that he make the most of his second chance and be honest but at the expense of sacrificing his freedom and breaks parole.
Along the way, he meets Fantine, played flawlessly by Anne Hathaway. She is trying to make money to send home to her daughter, who is living with two caregivers, who not only are thieves, but treat Cozette, Fantine's daughter, poorly.
I will not give away the entire movie, this is a film you will have to go and see for yourself. The costumes were well designed as is the sets. The cinematography was excellent, the film was well paced and at 160 minutes, you wound't even notice because the film starts with an epic beginning.
The music was just phenomenal, no other words can describe it. A true epic, this film is worth seeing again and again. And if you are not a fan of musicals, you will be after you see this. The best film of 2012.
