Review of Les Misérables (2012) by Hugo P — 15 Apr 2014

Bolstered by strong performances and great visuals, I am shocked on how much I liked Les Misérables. I am not a huge fan of musicals; I avoid musicals because I'm not that into them, I'm not a music guy.

But this was one of the better musicals I have seen in my life. I was turned off by the time, which is a little over two and a half hours long. I wasn't looking forward to watching it. But in the opening scene I was hooked.

It looks beautiful. The opening scene is when the main character is pulling the ship with the rope, and the special effects look amazing for the ship. The cinematography in the movie is amazing. The lighting is really good.

The movie is shot very well. One of the best looking movies I have seen in a while. I wished I have seen this in the theater to see this beautiful film on the big screen, but even on my television it still looked amazing.

The songs are lovely. Since all of the dialogue is singing everything sounded great. Now the biggest problem that people have with the movie is Russell Crowe singing. Like I said I'm not a huge music guy so I didn't have a problem with his singing.

It's not as bad as people have said it to be. It's not as good a Hugh Jackman or Anne Hathaway but it's not terrible. Russell Crowe's singing is fine. The performances are superb. This is one of Hugh Jackman's stronger performances outside of his wolverine character.

Everyone does a good job as their characters. One of my problems with the movie is that the movie is really long. There is this part in the movie that is maybe ten or fifteen minutes of the movie where I am not engaged and I'm doing something else.

Another problem is not with the movie, but the Oscar that the movie got. Anne Hathaway won best supporting actress but she is only in the movie for maybe twenty minutes. Other than that this is a great movie.

I didn't expect to like it but I ended up loving it. If you are not a fan of musicals don't watch this. But, with the exception of those people, I would recommend this to anyone.
