Les Misérables might not seem appealing to a lot of people before viewing it. The idea of 2 hours 30 minutes of constant singing with very little actual dialogue might not seem to be the most enjoyable film experience. Once the film gets going, it really does suck you into the story and characters.

It is a risky move having the near entirety of the film in song but it really pays off. All actors play the characters well and really bring life to the songs. There were some jokes made regarding Russell Crowe's singing voice but there is nothing to worry about in the actual film. His voice might not be as strong as Hugh Jackman's but as the lead villain you would not want two identical voices. This fits in perfectly with creating the conflict in the two characters. The rest of the cast are a joy to see on the screen. Anne Hathaway shows why she deserved her Oscar and Sacha Baron Cohen and Helena Bonham Carter brings some good comic relief. Even the younger cast, including the impressive Daniel Huttlestone can keep up with the veterans.

Away from the acting, the film is really well put together. There are some excellent choices of camera angles which really show of the 19th Century France sets. The scenes flow together well and the songs do not seem awkwardly placed.

If you dislike musicals, then it is probably a wise move to avoid Les Misérables. The story is simple to follow and whilst it is not packed with memorable songs, you will find yourself humming at least one or 2 for days following it. For those who want their musicals with some emotional weight to it rather than a happy and hyper pace then will be consumed with the story on show here.
